Special Features of the Dairy Initiative

To streamline participation in the Dairy Power Initiative and build momentum for dairy biopower projects, Energy Trust has incorporated the following features:

State-wide scope

Energy Trust will accept applications for dairy biopower projects from operations across Oregon in 2008. We typically fund projects that deliver power to the Oregon territory of Portland General Electric or Pacific Power. However, we have broadened the scope of the dairy initiative to maximize early participation and build a portfolio of projects that demonstrate sound technology and viable approaches. Projects that deliver power to utilities statewide will be considered at least through 2008.

Standard incentive

The Dairy Initiative has launched with a standard incentive offering to help dairy owners easily estimate what to expect in Energy Trust incentives. The simple Dairy Incentive Spreadsheet Tool on this website provides an immediate incentive calculation with just a few simple inputs. Incentives for other biopower projects are determined on a customized, case-by-case basis.

Simplified cost data

Detailed project cost data is not required as part of the application to participate in the Dairy Power Initiative. Only basic capital costs and operating expenses are included in the application. However, as a condition of receiving funding, detailed data is required upon project completion to help Energy Trust learn more about the cost structure of these projects.

Oregon dairy farmers can contact one of the following experts to discuss investing in an anaerobic digester:

  • Amanda Green, Renewable Energy Project Coordinator at the Oregon Dairy Farmers Association by or by phone, 360-751-4190
  • Mike Gamroth, Extension Dairy Specialist at Oregon State University by or by phone, 541-737-3316
