BEND:
Summit High School
wins national grant
for Hybrid Electric
Power Generation Unit
The
next ingenious invention
may not come from a giant
corporation, but from
Summit High School right
here in Oregon. The Bend
high school recently won
a $10,000 InvenTeams grant
from the Lemelson-MIT
Program for their proposal
to invent and build a
solar electric vehicle
charging station and electric
vehicle charging station.
Summit won a solar demonstration
grant from Energy Trust
of Oregon, Inc., in 2003. "The
Energy Trust grant for
the school's photovoltaic
system really kick-started
the process. It is allowing
us to gain momentum in
alternative energy awareness,
which will be one of the
most pressing issues these
kids will have to deal
with in the future. With
these grants, our kids
are creating meaningful
solutions to important
energy and environmental
problems," said Chip
Miller, Technology and
Pre-Engineering Education
teacher at Summit.

PENDLETON:
Energy Trust in
your community
Pendleton
is running a bit more
efficiently than it did,
as homeowners and businesses
are saving energy and
money by taking advantage
of financial incentives
from Energy Trust.
"Pendleton is home
to businesses making good
choices to reduce energy
use," said Margie
Harris, executive director,
Energy Trust. "As
energy costs increase,
we think that we'll be
seeing more Pendleton
homeowners taking advantage
of these programs, as
well as even more businesses
looking for relief from
growing costs."

TRADE
ALLY OF THE MONTH:
The Light Edge,
Inc.
The
Light Edge, Inc., was
the first lighting manufacturer
to join the Energy Trust's
Trade Ally Network, and
they've seen the market
for energy efficient lighting
grow dramatically. "A
lot of projects wouldn't
have gone forward without
Energy Trust incentives," said
David Gerton, president
of the Tualatin-based
company. The Light Edge
designs and manufactures
commercial and industrial
T5HO lighting and distributes
its products across North
America. To develop their
business, the company
holds technical seminars
for end users, architects,
engineers and distributors
and also publishes technical
reports to advance the
industry. Gerton says
the company is growing
geometrically. "We
have new, super-efficient
commercial products presently
in the introduction phase
that are 40 to 50 percent
more efficient than products
currently installed." The
Light Edge has 22 employees
and a 30,000 square foot
manufacturing facility
in Tualatin. Pictured
