CORVALLIS: Corvallis takes the Energy Challenge
Corvallis is off to a great start for its energy
makeover. During the week of March 3, 70 Corvallis homes
received Home Energy Reviews and 55 homeowners signed up
for future reviews, with hundreds more expected.
Energy assessments in five businesses, solar evaluations
for as many municipal facilities and a Power Lunch for
manufacturers rounded out the kick-off week.
The Corvallis Energy Challenge officially launched
March 3, when Corvallis City Council adopted a
resolution supporting this citywide effort to inspire
homeowners, businesses and local government to increase
energy efficiency and benefit from clean, renewable
energy. The year-long, multi-pronged program is a
collaborative effort by the Corvallis Sustainability
Coalition and Energy Trust of Oregon.

TRADE ALLY OF THE MONTH: Bull Mountain Mechanical, Tigard
Getting customers involved is the key to Bull Mountain
Mechanical's success with Home Performance with
ENERGY STAR®, a comprehensive home improvement
program. Energy Trust recently recognized Bull Mountain
as the 2007 Home Performance Contractor of the Year.
Jack Hansen, owner, says customers are curious about how
their homes operate. They become engaged in the
comprehensive home assessment, which includes a duct
blaster test to locate leakage in ductwork, a blower
door test and an infrared camera scan to identify where
air escapes from the home.
Bull Mountain Mechanical completed many Home
Performance projects in 2007 and looks forward to seeing
the evaluations of the previous year by their customers.
"Most customers start with the Home Energy Review and
then take advantage of the bonus incentive for the full
Home Performance testing. Once they see that insulation
isn't that expensive and that they can really save on
their energy costs, they're interested in doing more,"
said Hansen. Kevin O'Leary handles the Home Performance
work for Bull Mountain. The company believes that
continued education is the best way for Bull Mountain
to ensure customer satisfaction.

PORTLAND: Lucky Labrador brews beer with solar power
Lucky Labrador Brewing Company's new Solar Flare Ale is
the company's first solar beer. The Brewery recently
installed a solar water heating system on the rooftop of
its SE Hawthorne Boulevard brewpub. Owner Gary Geist
says the system will save money by replacing natural
gas used to heat water for the brewing process and fit
right in to a more sustainable Portland.
"It's an interesting time, first with the technology of
solar systems, second the economic factor and third,
sustainability is big in Portland," Geist said. "Those
three things are hitting at the same time."
