Passively Building for Resiliency: Assessing Energy Efficiency and Resilient Design in Oregon Buildings for Today and Tomorrow

Energy Trust invites you to a free event with 2018 Net Zero Fellow Joel Good. A senior consultant with RWDI’s Building Performance and Sustainability team, Joel will present his research on the value of passive design strategies for resiliency that align with net-zero design for new commercial buildings in Oregon.

Joel’s research evaluates two building designs using Kellogg Middle School as a case-study prototype. The school is designed to serve as a community center during a catastrophic event and part of the research focuses on how the building will perform when used as a place of refuge. While considering future climate in Oregon, passive systems and their resiliency were analyzed with a long-term view. Based on this case study, Joel will address key research questions: Can we establish a standardized methodology to evaluate resiliency? Can we clearly quantify benefits beyond energy savings? And how can we leverage our findings to improve community resiliency while striving for net-zero energy?

Energy Trust’s annual Net Zero Fellowship aims to uncover potential barriers to the widespread adoption of net-zero commercial building design, while growing the community constructing these remarkable buildings. Supporting Oregon design professionals to help bring more resilient, high-performance, net-zero energy buildings to the state is at the heart of Energy Trust’s vision.
