High-Performance Ventilation for Commercial Buildings

MAY 28, 2020 | 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
  • This event has passed.

Please join us for a six-hour live and interactive High-Performance Design Training presented in partnership with NEEA BetterBricksClark Public Utilities and AIA OregonContent for this training is tailored for architects, engineers and other commercial building and HVAC design professionals based in Oregon and Washington. Training participants can receive 6 AIA HSW and 6 Practicing Institute of Engineers (PIE) CEUs

Attendees will be educated on high-performance ventilation, including system design, specification and installation. The training further helps familiarize participants with dedicated outside air systems (DOAS), including technological advances and the pairing of HRVs/ERVs and very high efficiency heating and cooling systems.

Through this course, attendees will learn to:

  • Identify the features and attributes of high-performance buildings, including common mistakes and drawbacks to “value engineering” HVAC systems
  • Differentiate between HRV and ERV operation and design, as well as metrics of efficiency
  • Understand emerging commercial codes regarding ventilation and energy efficiency
  • Communicate to clients the important role ventilation plays in health and indoor air quality (IAQ) based on studies and emerging requirements and standards for IAQ
  • Understand and differentiate between various current and future ventilation requirements and standards, including ASHRAE 62.1, IMC and PHI
  • Identify retrofit opportunities using DOAS and high-performance heating and cooling
  • Design control strategies for CAV, DCV and VAV flow options, and building control integration
  • Properly design, size and install ventilation systems and ductwork

About the presenter:
Barry Stephens, Ventacity Systems, Inc., and ASHRAE Member

Barry works with Ventacity Systems, Inc., a manufacturer of very high-performance, Passive House-certified HRVs. Prior to joining Ventacity in 2016, he spent 15 years at Zehnder America, Inc., a Swiss-based world leader in HRVs, where he led the introduction of Zehnder systems to North America (including Solar Decathlon teams, NZE homes and Passive House projects).
